HYDRA is a debut album of Amsterdam-based chamber jazz group Edson Ensemble. It is a journey through multiple musical influences. Carrying on the chamber jazz tradition of Gil Evans (Birth of Cool), Herbie Hancock (Speak Like a Child), and Chick Corea (Septet), we create colourful soundscapes and kaleidoscopic textures with our unique instrumentation of flute, bass clarinet, flugelhorn, violin, viola, and double bass.

“Hydra” in Greek mythology refers to a multi-headed serpent, which we use as a symbolic metaphor for myriad musical streams coexisting within a single artistic entity. This is also what our album is about: stylistic diversity in chamber jazz. HYDRA embodies this concept; stylistically it is firmly rooted in the jazz tradition, although its influences include Funk, Soul, Afro-Cuban, Bossa Nova, and Contemporary Classical music bound with improvisation and a focus on colour and texture.

A pivotal collaboration for this project involved working closely with Toronto-based composer Quinn Jacobs. Commissioned to create new material, Jacobs played a crucial role in shaping the ensemble's distinctive sound. Together, we've created an album that not only pays homage to jazz traditions but also ventures into uncharted territories, celebrating the fusion of genres and the exploration of musical possibilities.
